Valero Energy oil refinery in Delaware will be shut down, idle until early April for repairs

Valero Energy Corp. says it will shut down its Delaware City oil refinery for at least a month while repairs are made to a major refining unit.

The company said Wednesday that the shutdown will take place over the next 10 days, and that the refinery will remain idle until a coker is ready to be restarted in early April.

The company said a loss of power and steam to the coker last month has resulted in repairs expected to take at least 30 days, and that officials decided it would be cost-efficient to shut down the entire plant while repairs are made.

Valero spokesman Bill Day said the company is still investigating what caused the electrical failure leading to last month's coker failure. The failure led to a series of pollutant releases that generated complaints from area residents.
